JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 10, 2022) – Lt. Cmdr. Philip Rothberg, a physician at Naval Hospital Jacksonville’s General Surgery Clinic, examines a patient. Rothberg holds a doctor of medicine degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, he says, “In General Surgery, we support the health of our patients by providing general, bariatric, oncologic, and colorectal surgical care." Since March 3, 1871, the Navy Medical Corps has continued the proud tradition of the "Ship’s Surgeon," who was part of the ship’s crew since the establishment of the Navy in 1775. Navy physicians serve aboard Navy ships at sea, in aviation and undersea medicine, with Marines in field hospitals, and on humanitarian and disaster relief missions.
