American women still aren’t guaranteed paid leave for pregnancy, even though federal law does not allow for employers to discriminate against women when they apply for a job and charge them less, according to a new report by the National Partnership of Women & Families, a coalition of more than 80 women’s advocacy groups. And although more than half of the nation’s 50 largest companies with reported parental leave policies offered significant amounts of paid leave to workers, less than 20 offered completely funded leave policies.
Although the United States guarantees all workers the right to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for the birth or adoption of a baby, the need to change employment practices for women who are pregnant or caring for a newborn remains urgent. According to the group’s Pregnancy and Newborn Statistics, one in four mothers had to stop working because of pregnancy-related complications, and seven out of 10 women who were unable to return to their jobs due to pregnancy or childbirth received no benefit whatsoever from their employers.
Last year, President Obama signed the Family and Medical Leave Act, expanding unpaid leave to workers of both genders, and requiring that employers with 50 or more employees give certain workers time off to care for a newborn or seriously ill relative. But advocates are still working to make sure that pregnant workers are protected from workplace discrimination, that funds are set aside for parental leave and that men, too, get to take leave.
Among the actions the group says women can take, besides demanding paid family leave:
• Encourage legislators and state and local officials to pass laws that provide paid leave for new parents.
• Receive pay for taking paid leave for certain family roles, such as being a caregiver for an elderly or disabled parent.
• “Celebrate” all families who provide maternal and paternal leave and insist that employers expand coverage.
