Today’s sneering by Richard Cohen, the op-ed page editor at The Washington Post, is at its prime:
The report, by the nonpartisan General Social Survey, found that approval of U.S. immigration has plummeted to a five-decade low, in the midst of a surge of legal and illegal immigration. Mr. Obama’s policies have dented the very foundation of America’s “melting pot.”
“The decline is stunning,” said Dan Smith, a political scientist at the University of California, San Diego, who noted that the Hispanic population of the United States has boomed to 100 million, while that of the U.S. born has plunged to a 50-year low.
Actually, there’s no “decline,” just a lower level of “approval.” There’s a pretty good political reason for this:
“White people have voted more and more Republican as the Hispanic share of the population grows. The Democrats’ advantage among Hispanics has risen sharply as well,” said Peter Wehner, who served in the White House under President George W. Bush.
In the last 25 years, there’s been a huge and sudden increase in non-white births, and not just Hispanic births. As a percent of the total population, the U.S. has gone from 66 percent white in 1980 to 61 percent white now, even as the Hispanic population has soared to a record 40.2 percent of the total. As a result, non-white “Americans” are 25 percent of the total (and 20 percent of the voting-age population). In 1980, according to Pew, the Hispanic share of the U.S. population was about 8 percent, and 9 percent of the voting-age population. There was none of this when there was a huge immigrant influx during the Reagan administration, or when President Clinton faced a huge Republican immigration debate in 1996.
